There are many unique things about Wagga Wagga. One thing people don't know about Wagga Wagga is that the humble Chiko Roll first debuted at the Agricultural Show on 1951. This icon of Aussie Cuisine, which is similar to a giant spring roll, was borne out of practical need. Inventor Frank McEnroe saw a vendor selling spring rolls out the front of an VFL (now AFL) game and decided that a bigger roll with thicker pastry would be a benefit. This would allow for a beer in one hand and the roll in the other while at the footy. Thus providing sustenance and social lubrication.
The practical Chicko roll reached its absolute pinnacle of popularity during the 70's & 80's and was seen to be as Aussie as Thongs, Holden Cars and was the handy meal wrapped into a roll. All of this began in Wagga Wagga .
The city of Wagga Wagga sits midwaybetween the two largest cities in Australia: Sydney (452 km southwest) and Melbourne ( 456 kilometres northeast) with the Sydney–Melbourne railway line passing through.
